Herndon Environmental Network (HEN) was founded in 2011 by a group of Herndon-area residents concerned about environmental issues globally and here in our community. We are working to improve the environment through education, initiatives, and advocacy in the greater Herndon, VA area.

We welcome your involvement! Community partners, volunteers, and members are crucial as we continue to expand our group and implement local projects. Projects in 2013 will focus on recycling, local food and preventing food waste, removing invasive plants, bicycling and using public transportation, gardening, and more! We hope to see you at one of our meetings or events.

Join HEN as we learn what happens to our recycling when it leaves our homes. Kids are welcome on the tour and we will meet for a picnic lunch at a park following the tour. More info on our Facebook page.

Stop by the HEN table to learn about the life cycle of food and hear about our upcoming events.In partnership with Mom's Organic Market, we will be collecting veggie and fruit scraps in an effort to reduce the amount of organic material ending up in landfills. For a list of what we'll accept, check out the "HEN - Compostable Food Scraps" document, uploaded in the "Files" section of our Facebook group.

Join us as we remove Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum), Autumn Olive (Eleagnus umbellata), and Multiflora Rose (Rosa multiflora).The removal activity is preceded by our "Native Plant of the Month" talk featuring the Common Paw Paw (Asimina triloba).Bring work gloves and wear long sleeves/long pants to protect you from poison ivy. Bring tools if you can.
